MUSIC
Title: The Futurist
Musican: Robert Downey Jr.
"After falling in love with his recent movie "Sherlock Holmes," I couldn't wait to hear Robert Downey Jr.'s CD, "The Futurist." Despite his charming voice it left much to be desired. The lyrics made no sense. Not that hey have to, but many didn't even rhyme. Some lyrics don't sound like they should even be in the same somg. The songs don't relay a message, and are easily forgotten. The sad part is I really wanted to like this CD."

BOOKS
Author: Dian Curtis Regan
"Princess Nevermore" is a fantasy about a young princess looking for adventure. But Quinn sadly can't get much because she, her kingdom, and many others are under ground. So, Cam helps her get to the surface. He's not very magical yet, he's still only a beginner, he wanted them both to be on the surface. But, he didn't understand he had to be below "the pond", too. Quinn eventually shows up on the surface, alone. Then makes friends and finds a lover but in the end she has to choose either A. stay and live with her lover or B. go back to her life as a princess, and be with Cam, who she soon finds out she likes him, too. But there's a flaw with each for A. if she stays with her lover, she would age a lot slower, like Mondo lived, or B. love Cam but marry a total stranger. It was a hard choice but she made it. I look forward to more splendid fantasy books from Dian Curtis Regan.

"At the center of Wintergirls is Lia, a high school senior who has already been hospitalized twice for anorexia. She lives with her father, stepmother and stepsister to avoid conflict with her overbearing mother. Lia has managed to keep her whole family in a state of denial. Inside, though, Lia is in crisis. Her longtime best friend, Cassie, died on a night she called Lia 33 times. The two girls hadn’t been speaking so Lia ignore them and is now wracked with guilt. They were locked in a dangerous pact to be the skinniest girl in school. Anderson explores both the brutally isolating self-loathing experienced by those suffering from these diseases and the twisted "support" that girls with eating disorders offer each other, encouragement that often spirals into mutual self-destruction. This is an excellent novel, at times, touching, at other times, horrific. It certainly opened my eyes to the twisted thinking of some people with eating disorders and also cutters. I was amazed at some of Lia’s tricks on “weigh in day” and various other ways she constantly hid her seriously escalating problems. I would highly recommend this book, but be aware that the subject matter is not for someone who is very impressionable. I would say it is appropriate for young adults age 14 & up. "

" The Red Necklace" stunningly keeps me on my toes. Yann Margoza has gypsy powers, who eventually uses them to save Sido from marrying an awful man with some help. There's so much drama, suspense, and even a little romance. When I was reading "The Red Necklace", I wanted to keep reading it when it ended because it was so well-written. But instead it leaves you hanging in a good way to make you crave more from Sally Gardner, but for now I'll keep a look-out for more suspensefully, well-written books from the "master" at suspenseful books, Sally Gardner.

Depressed after the death of her stepfather, high school junior Zara goes to live with her grandmother in a small Maine town, where new friends tell Zara the strange man she keeps seeing may be a pixie king, and that only "were" creatures can stop him from taking souls. The pixie king is after Zara, she thinks he wants to make her his queen. Zara doesn't want any part of this. She has developed feelings for someone else, but could he be a werewolf? Zara finds out that the pixie king doesn't want her for his queen, but her mother. Zara turns to her friends and her grandmother for their help and support to contain the pixie king. I liked the pacing of this book. It went fast enough, but also not to the point of motion sickness! I had not read a book about pixies and "were" creatures, but I found it to be interesting and entertaining. My daughter and I both liked this novel.

"Exposed" teaches a few real-life lessons that even I will remember along with this thrilling book that shows kids what happens every day and could happen to anyone, even you. The sad part is that in real life it isn't always a happy ending. This story is about Chandra at age 16 who has great grades and a very best friend who'll never leave her no matter what. Chan decides to look online and in chatrooms, which we all know is wrong, but sadly people do it still and know what could happen, too. But Chan discovers she put her sister in danger. Now it's either to "spill it" and get in trouble, or have something happen to her little sister. Chan knows because there's too many coincidences to understand. For now though, I'll look for more books like "Exposed" from Susan Vaught."

"Old Magic" is very unique, interesting, and keeps you wanting more. Kate and Jarrod struggle with friendship [and tempers] while trying to lift a curse off Jarrod and his family, [it's hard for them to concentrate on anything but each other]. Especially with Jarrod refusing to believe in his "gift", he tells her she merely has a talent, and she is not a "witch" and can do spells. This book keeps me strikingly on the edge and makes me hunger for more when their journey ends. I hope to find more books from Mariann Curley.
