MOVIES

Hachi: A Dog's Tale

Hachi: A Dog's Tale is absolutely amazing. The creators have taken a very well-known piece of Japanese culture and Americanized it without ruining the story. It is a touching story for the whole family to watch. It is also very sad so watch out for tears.

MUSIC

Title:  The Futurist
Musican:  Robert Downey Jr.

"After falling in love with his recent movie "Sherlock Holmes," I couldn't wait to hear Robert Downey Jr.'s CD, "The Futurist." Despite his charming voice it left much to be desired. The lyrics made no sense. Not that hey have to, but many didn't even rhyme. Some lyrics don't sound like they should even be in the same somg. The songs don't relay a message, and are easily forgotten. The sad part is I really wanted to like this CD."

BOOKS

Title:  In Cold Blood
                       Author:  Truman Capote

In Cold Blood is a fabulous nonfiction account of four brutal murders. The way Capote goes into meticulous detail makes you feel as though you are reading about the lives of two fictional characters not real men. It is easy to lose yourself in the reading and feel as if you are with the murderers or feel the terror of their victims. However, at times Capote uses very technical terms and it can be hard to follow. Overall I enjoyed reading this book.

Title:  The Scarlet Letter
                      Author:   Nathaniel Hawthorne

Out of the books I’ve read, this was the hardest one to understand. It was easy to get the basic story line, but more intricate details were lost in the extravagant language. Looking back on the reading, not much stands out besides a few key events in the plot.

Title:  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
                           Author:  Mark Twain
I enjoyed this novel very much. It was nice to take a break from serious books and read a novel about more or less childish adventures. I could really feel for Huckleberry. When he was worried, I was worried. When he argued with Tom Sawyer, I almost felt angry with Tom too. Huckleberry Finn tells his story in a unique, darling way.

Title:  The Grapes of Wrath
                       Author:  John Steinbeck

As usual with Steinbeck novels, The Grapes of  Wrath is a casual story with generally likeable characters. Also in step with his other novels Steinbeck brings about the end of The Grapes of Wrath with a twist. It really gives a good look into a different side of the Great Depression. As the Joad family’s numbers dwindle you find yourself feeling their anguish and triumphs.

Title:  Obasan
                     Author:  Joy Kogawa

I had a hard time reading this book. It seemed to drag on forever. It is written in a very poetic style. This book is more for people who enjoy nonfiction and definitely for older readers. There were very few points during the plot where I actually sympathized with the characters. I practically had to force myself to read it.

Title:  To Kill a Mockingbird
                       Author:   Harper Lee

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. The way Scout narrates draws you in. It also is very easy to understand and explains anything that could be confusing. Not only does it provide an interesting story line, it also addresses social issues such as racism and judging people. I would recommend this book to anyone.
