Inclement Weather/Emergency Closings

The Weyauwega Public Library will be open for the stated hours when it is safe and reasonable. As in all situations there are times when common sense should prevail and the staff should use their judgement at these times. Situations, which could arise when it is not safe and reasonable to remain open, are as follows:

  1. Snowstorms that make it unsafe for the staff to reach their homes. Blowing and drifting snow, excessive cold, and large amounts of snow forecast, are all reasons for the staff to be aware of changing conditions. If the roads are becoming hazardous, businesses are closing, and storm warnings are issued, the staff should consider closing the library.
The staff is to make the decision for closing the library. The following persons are to be called before the library should close: city hall , informing the city clerk or the assistant clerk; a board member, preferably the board president; and WDUX radio station, notifying them of the closing.
  2. Tornado watches and warnings should be taking very seriously. During a watch, staff should watch the sky and make patrons aware of the tornado watch. In the event of a warning and the fire sirens are sounded in the city of Weyauwega, staff should take cover in the basement of the library, making sure that all patrons in the building at the time are also taken to the basement.
  3. If the building's fire alarms should sound, staff should make sure all persons in the building are evacuated. Staff should then go to the nearest phone and call the Fire Department. No one should re-enter the building until the all clear has been given by the Fire Department.
  4. If evacuation is needed during library open hours, staff is to turn off the main water valve in the basement furnace room and shut off main electrical panel. All doors and windows should be secured and locked before staff leaves the building.
  5. In case of a bomb threat, the building should be evacuated immediately of all persons and staff. Staff should then go to the nearest phone and call the Police and Fire Departments. No one should re-enter the building until the all clear has been given by the Police and /or Fire Departments.
